One of the Lassies | Ich and Du | Design by Shannon Daly
Shannon Daly (She/they) is a recent Product Design graduate from Central Saint Martins. Born and raised in North-east Glasgow, their work is centred around social well-being and applying design thinking to promote social sustainability.
She used the final year of her degree to produce two projects: one to address the issue of misogyny within British football spaces, and another to design a tangible interface that contributes to rapport-building between therapists and their patients as well as making the experience more sensory stimulating.
‘One of the Lassies’ is a series of three football scarves to be used as part of a wider campaign and system of workshops to get football fans discussing the way misogyny arises within supporter spaces. Football is the world's most popular sport and occupies a unique position in our cultural landscape, shaping people's timetables, the way they dress, and how they relate to their families, their communities, and their cities.
The campaign and framework are designed to kickstart discussions about sexism and misogyny in football spaces. By producing her own series of scarves and a fanzine, they aim to use these traditional football artefacts to tell the stories of the women who follow the beautiful game and involve clubs, leagues and associations in doing more to combat the issue of misogyny in football.

Shannon’s second project, Ich and Du, uses a board game interface to encourage rapport building between Cognitive Behavioural Therapists (CBT) and their service users.
Built around Stanford University's Dr David Burns' TEAM-CBT framework, Shannon surveyed over 50 mental health service users as well as incorporating her own therapy experience to develop the final concept.
As a working-class artist, Shannon believes that art and design are inherently political. She cites this quote from art writer Hrag Vartanian; "Artists and writers with no ethics or beliefs are just decorators and scribes for the rich."
On this Shannon said: “This quote struck a chord with me before I enrolled in art school and one which I try to echo through my entire practice.
“For me, I want to produce exciting projects that are accessible to all and contribute to ongoing social sustainability and activism movements, that are backed with academic research and are built up not just by myself as an individual but through consultation of wider communities - this method was a key element to both of my recent projects.
“I believe creativity is the powerhouse of humanity, our ability to express it in the ways that we do sets us apart from all the other animals that we share the earth with.
“I think that using it as a tool to foster community wellbeing will be at the heart of the fight in the struggles we face in the future.”
‘One of the Lassies’ is on display at North London’s OOF Gallery as part of their ‘The Art of the Football Scarf’ group exhibition until February 23rd 2023.
